Things That Make You Go Hmmm….

by Coreen Nishijo

confusion_dog.jpgAs I read the paper more and more, I am reminded of why I just quickly skim it instead of reading every thing in detail. I think the most time I’ve ever spent in the newspaper is to do the crossword puzzle. Don’t get me wrong! We’ve got great newspapers, but quite frankly, the news reported can be, well… something that makes me wanna just shake my head.

I read in the headlines that we’ve got our 3rd TB investigation for potential outbreak in the schools this year. BUT we shouldn’t be concerned because none of the cases are related. Oh great! We’ve never had any outbreaks in the schools in recent years and this year we have three?!?! I guess one good thing I can say is that at least it was caught and contained. Besides, I thought TB was one of those obsolete illnesses. I even thought they froze a sample of the strain just in case we ever get TB again. I guess I’m wrong…

Driving around today, I saw a family of segway riders riding around Kakaako. Now, if you’ve been following in the papers, segways are making the news in Hawaii because of safety concerns for pedestrians walking on Waikiki sidewalks. Apparently with all the pedestrians in Waikiki, the segways present hazards. But I can’t imagine a segway being on the road either because they move at top speeds of around 12 mph?!?! Honestly, I’m not sure I’d be thrilled if I had to follow a segway rider on the road. TOOT! TOOT!

Last week, we just had one of our major airline carriers Aloha Airlines close its doors. That’s too bad, but here’s something that really just struck me as a strange offer. I also just read that a realtor training company is giving a discounted rate to displaced Aloha Airlines workers. Yes! They get to take the realtor-associate agent course at nearly 50% off the normal rate. The problem with that is Hawaii already has thousands of realtors and for the month of April a whopping total of 256 single family homes and 384 condominiums were sold. Ummm…. That’s less than one per realtor. I’m sure you all can do the math.

Maybe, I just have to look at things a bit more politically – perhaps in a different way. I’ll work on that… I also really have to start thinking about what it is that I’m reading…
