Inspiration for Today’s Youth
Looking in the Honolulu Advertiser today, you see a row of faces. These people are suspected of being connected with a drug ring smuggling more than 1.2 million dollars in crystal methamphetamine per month.
The sad part is that most of the people were in their early twenties. Is this what our society has come to? We deny access to cutting edge technology and businesses like the Hawaii Superferry so we can live the life we’ve always lived for years. The problem with living the life we’ve always lived is that it presents a one-sided view for the younger generation! They don’t know anything else other than what they’ve been exposed and as a result, they never strive for anything.
We grumble about how our children are leaving for the mainland because the opportunities here in Hawaii are fairly limited. We hired nurses from the mainland and even thought about recruiting teachers from the mainland as well. At the same time, we stifle the hopes and dreams of the younger generations because we want things to remain the same! What we’re essentially doing is crippling the next generation and wondering why more and more youth are turning to things like drugs, alcohol, gambling and early parent hood.
We’re afraid of letting people from the outer islands come onto our island for fear that they will commercialize everything yet, we fail to remember that we were built as a state that “imported” most of it’s people for labor and brides.
We need to come to a place where we begin to expose our children to life beyond Hawaii. If you’re already doing that, then great, but if not, then start doing something different to build the talent and unity of Hawaii’s people. The people here have so much potential and talent, but most times, we’re trained to not do anything with it.
Every so often, we’ll feature something or someone that can help to foster the skills and talents within the people (especially Hawaii’s youth) here.
Today’s event is called “Fortune Cookies” by K. T. Phagnasay. Playing Thursday and Friday (10/12) only, this play will be held at the Actor’s Gym from 7:30pm – 10pm. K.T Phagnasay is an up and coming playwright – one we should be on the lookout for.
Expose your kids to the arts. Expose your kids to more than just television and movies. Get your kids to start dreaming!
