Change Is Scary!
The Hawaii Superferry just laid off 249 of its crew members last week in response to the decision that it would not be able to operate until an environmental assessment has been completed.
If you’ve read the timeline of the Hawaii Superferry, then you’ve noticed a trend where lawmakers and judges alike have favored this business in the previous years. Just where is the love now? It seems that the Hawaii Superferry is being shafted left and right!
Judge Cardoza is the same judge who only last year threw out a case that environmental groups were making against the Hawaii Superferry. Just last week, when it seemed that the only difference between then and now is that the Hawaii Superferry is now open for business, this same Judge says that the Hawaii Superferry has to obey environmental laws. Forgive me if I am mistaken, but I don’t think Chapter 343 changed much within the last year.
Today in the Honolulu Advertiser, the headlines talked about the Hawaii Superferry spending a lot of money on lobbying efforts to gain access to setting up business in Hawaii. Over $130,000 spent and where is that now?
Lawmakers are really saying much even though they are in the spotlight. One caption under a photo of Governor Linda Lingle read something to the effect of, “Governor cancels trip to China to tend to Superferry Issues.” Honestly, who really cares about her canceling her trip? We’re interested to know what’s going on in the “Special Session”!
Change is scary. One minute the Hawaii Superferry is riding high and then the next minute this business is dropped like a hot potato! Talk about change!
As for new businesses and new technologies wanting to do business with us, I be really surprised that anyone would pick Hawaii to open a business. Especially if those were new technologies or new businesses, Hawaii doesn’t show that we tolerate change very well.
One thing that puzzles me is this – Why would lawmakers and judges work so hard to push the Hawaii Superferry through the set up process only to change their minds later? What happened to the initial support of Judge Cardoza as well as Governor Linda Lingle.
If you think I’m saying that nothing’s being done by lawmakers, I am. Nothing is being done because they don’t know what to do. The Superferry issue is not just an environmental issue any more - it’s become a political one. No lawmaker in their right mind is going to take a stand for or against. So the drama continues.
